Can I find my Ipod touch with the serial number?

I lost my 64gb Ipod touch in school today and i don't have any Ipod finder apps on it. Is it possible to protect it with my serial number, or even find it? I have a password but its not the strongest one in the world, and I know that Apple wont cover a stolen Ipod which would set me back a bit. I doubt anyone would return it to the main office, so any other ideas?
