Telescope - the mirrors?

Hey so basically have got a 114EQ Newtonian telescope, in the daytime i tested it out by looking at tree's/far away objects in the view finder and then looking through the eye piece at them closer up and it was working fine, went out tonight to view the stars, just about managed to get a star in the middle of the crosswires in the view finder but pitch black in the eye piece, the only thing i can think of is a problem with the mirrors, or is it something else? many thanks
