How to put smoke back into a wire?

I was installing a depth finder on my boat when it started smoking. I know that electricity runs on smoke so when the smoke is released, it stops working. I tried to catch the smoke in a jar but I could only capture about 50% of it. Does anyone know how to put the smoke back into the wire so it will work again? Do you think it will still work with only 50% of the total smoke?
